Are you looking for someone who will give you honest, kind feedback on your manuscript? Who will dive into your manuscript as enthusiastically as if it were her own? Who understands the value of hiring an editor but also understands the realities of self publishing costs?
Book editors typically charge per word. One cent per word is the absolute minimum.
So, for a 75K-word manuscript, that’s $750.
But here's the catch: most edits start at two cents per word, and can go as high as eight. And that's just for the developmental edits; line edits are a separate fee, also at cents per word. So is proofreading.
For many self-published authors, it’s difficult to see a return on that investment.
And yet, the right editor can make all the difference. A fresh pair of eyes to see your story from a different perspective. An unbiased opinion, because friends in our writers groups tend to be much kinder than the critics who will rate our books online.
As the editor-in-chief of the Drowsy Dragon, I've had the pleasure of working with all kinds of authors, some well-seasoned, some publishing their very first story with us. And as I brought my own debut novel to print, I saw the value of diving into a manuscript with honesty and kindness. If you've been looking for an editor but don't know where to start, please send me an email or fill out the form below. I'd love to work with you!
There are a few different kinds of edits to consider, which I've explained more in-depth below. The prices for each reflect a balance between the value on my time and a respect for an independent author's budgetary needs. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have!
These are ‘big picture’ edits given after you’ve self- completed two drafts of your novel. I’ll help you plug plot holes, tighten your characters’ motivations and development, gauge pacing, and offer suggestions as you write towards a compelling climax and satisfying denouement.
What's included:
A typed document of detailed thoughts and suggestions to consider.
'Reader thoughts' throughout your manuscript (intial reactions to the story)
An optional Zoom call, where we can discuss suggested edits together
Cost: $500
These are the edits that analyze line by line. Word by word. Is each sentence there for a reason? Is it doing what you hoped it would? Is the dialogue believable? Do you have run-ons or grammar we can work on together? This step comes after your developmental edits are complete.
What's included:
Comments and suggestions directly into your manuscript for you to process and consider as you work towards a final draft.
Sentence structure, grammar, word choice, and flow.
A second proofreading pass through manuscript, once line edits are complete. Final check for grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
An optional Zoom call, where we can discuss suggested edits together
Cost: $400
Interested in all three?
Cost: $800 total
(a $100 discount)
*All prices reflect manuscripts 50K-100K words. Contact me to discuss manuscripts with a shorter or longer word count.
**I would be the best fit for the following genres: literary, fantasy, creative non-fiction. I won't consider working on manuscripts with content above a PG-13 rating in language, sexual content, or violence (i.e. no erotica).
Structure of contract: expect to pay half of the cost up front, then half when work is completed
Time frame: 2-6 weeks, depending on word count and which package is selected
For questions, feel free to email me.
Or if you're ready to get started, fill out this form, and I'll be in touch within five business days.
I'm looking forward to connecting with you!
